Description
Beautiful Pousada de Cascais
The Pousada of Cascais, or Hotel Cascais, opened in Spring 2012 and is set within the walls of the 16th century Citadel in the centre of this delightful coastal town. The Citadel and the inner Fortress of Our Lady of Light (Nossa Senhora da Luz) were used between the 15th and 17th centuries for defending the Portuguese coast and the mouth of the River Tagus from French, English and Arab pirates. In the 19th century the Citadel of Cascais was the summer residence of the royal family and since then has been converted into what is now known as Hotel Cascais and Pousada of Cascais.

Cidadela de Cascais
Avenida D. Carlos I
2750-310 Cascais
Surrounding area:
- Estoril (5 kms): A cosmopolitan coastal town which has maintained its somewhat faded grandeur. The picturesque beach of Tamariz is overlooked by a castle and has many cafes and bars. Behind the beach is the casino which was the inspiration for Ian Fleming’s James Bond and Casino Royal.
- Guincho (9 kms): The magnificent sandy Atlantic beach of Guincho has some of the best rollers in Europe – it’s a true paradise for surfers.
- Sintra (17 kms): a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its fairytale palace, incredible vistas, and notable museum collections.
- Queluz (23 kms): The Palace of Queluz is Portugal’s finest example of Rococo architecture.
- Lisbon (27 kms): Europe’s second oldest capital city which oozes history and culture.
- Mafra (36 kms): When built, the gigantic Mafra Palace was intended to compete in magnificence and grandeur with Spain’s Escorial and St. Peter’s in Rome.
- Ericeira (39 kms): A charming fishing village with narrow streets, whitewashed houses edged in blue, sandy beaches and excellent seafood restaurants.
We have just stayed at this wonderful hotel. Perfect location opposite the marina, nice view, fantastic architecture where ancient and modern elements melt together, even the standard rooms are very nice, great breakfast and last but not least: this place is already special but what really makes it to a very special hotel is the STAFF: outstandingly friendly and helpful at all times! The best ingredient is always the one you cannot see: it’s the love and enthusiam someone puts in!
Only negative point; our stay was too short…
We have just returned from a week’s stay at the pousada in Cascais. We enjoyed it so much we are seriously thinking of booking a further week here this September. Everyone, from the reception staff, waiters and the chambermaids were without exception polite and welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble. We were lucky to have a room overlooking the marina which had ceiling to floor and wall to wall sliding glass door which led to huge patio. There were fresh flowers in the room. We arrived late at night after Resteraunts in Cascais were closed but had a really nice bar meal at midnight and the waiters did not make us feel we were a nuisance – the perfect introduction to this relaxing, welcoming hotel.
Could not fault our stay here. Best points are the amazing staff, who were polite, enthusiastic and welcoming at all times together with the location in beautiful Cascais. We would return.
Excellent stay for three days. Enjoyed it immensely. I can only re-iterate the comments from other guests as above. I would agree about the late maid service and maybe that can be addressed. We wanted to dine in the separate restaurant on the opposite side of the courtyard but they couldn’t fit us in ( everyone stayed at the hotel that evening because it was too wet to go out !) which was a shame . WE would have liked to have dined there. All in all, it was a nice experience and we loved Cascais , particularly the cultural aspects of the town. Best wishes
