In prime position overlooking the town of Guimaraes the Hotel Santa Marinha combines luxury with Portuguese history and culture. Guests can explore the lake, formal garden, cloisters, grotto and granite fountains. Or simply relax in the beautiful public rooms or swimming pool with views over the town. There is also an excellent restaurant. The Pousada Guimaraes also features the famous Portuguese azulejos (tiles) in abundance, some dating back to 1747.
The Hotel Guimaraes has 51 luxuriously furnished rooms, 22 of which were formerly monk’s cells. All rooms have en-suite bathroom, heating/air conditioning, safe, minibar, bathrobes, hairdryer, telephone, Cable TV and internet access.
The town of Guimaraes, known as the ‘the cradle of the Nation’, was Portugal’s first capital city and the birthplace of the first King of Portugal, Afonso Henriques. It is steeped in history dating as far back as the 10th century, making it one of the most popular destinations for tourists in Northern Portugal. The medieval town centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and was the 2012 European Capital of Culture. Approximately 9 kms from Guimaraes is the Celtic settlement, Citania de Briteiros, which was occupied from 400 BC and consists of over 150 dwellings.
This Pousada Guimaraes is located approximately two kilometres from the centre of the old town.

My daughters and I had a lovely stay in this elegant pousada. The staff were warm, natural and attentive and went out of their way to be helpful. The restaurant is excellent and the swimming pool are was refreshingly spacious. We had the most relaxing time.
I used to do some work in Portugal some years ago and when in Guimaraes I would stay in the Pousada, so this was good for the memories. My wife and I stayed in it and enjoyed looking back over the years.
We were most impressed with this, our first taste of a Poussada. Everything from the friendly and informative welcome at reception through to the very professional dining experience. The building and surrounding gardens are beautiful and spacious. The swimming pool was excellent and very clean. All together this was a unique experience which we will remember fondly for many years. Thoroughly recommended.
My 94 year old mother and I had a lovely night here in September as we were driving around northern Portugal and Spain. We found all of the Pousadas to be charming – in fact we picked out route based on staying at various Pousadas. The room was lovely and spacious. The view was so nice we opened the huge windows and had our cocktails right in the room looking out over the countryside. The staff was very helpful and attentive to my mother. The pool was glorious after a day of sightseeing. Dinner and breakfast delicious. Sara Luther
We stayed in the Pousada for 3 nights in October 2011. We had a wonderful stay. The building itself is very and historic. There is so much to see in the building. We stayed in one of the old rooms which was very interesting. We found the staff to very pleasant and professional. The food is very good, especially the breakfast. The gardens also add greatly to the experience. Guimaraes is a town full of history. The old square is a lovely place to lunch and enjoy the sunshine. Yes we would recommend this Pousada and also state that the town of Guimaraes is well worth a visit.
My husband and I stayed at the Pousada for one night in March 2013, and had the most pleasant stay of our 2 weeks vacation in Portugal. The pousada is beautiful, so is the surrounding areas, we enjoyed the tranquil atmosphere of the Pousada and its garden, the tasfully appointed room, this Pousada exceeded our expectation, we wish we could have stayed longer here. The moment we stepped inside, the reception we received was warm and courteous, we immediately felt at home. We had our delicious dinner in the beautiful dining room, received great service from the dining room staff, slept well, and the next day, we received direction to get to the free way to continue our journey. We felt so welcome in Portugal, and would like to thank the People of Portugal for the friendship and generosity given to us.
