Description
The Pousada in Alfama is the result of a superb conversion of an historic building combining both classical and contemporary elements.
Representing a collaboration of traditional and modern, the entrance of the Pousada is adorned with an urban piece of art by the Portuguese artist Bordalo II.
The Pousada is located in Alfama one of the oldest districts in Lisbon, Portugal’s historic and fascinating capital city. The hotel is situated on one of the highest viewpoints of the city in front of the Portas do Sol. The name is derived from one of Lisbon’s ancient medieval gates.
From the Pousada you can view one of Lisbon’s most stunning sunsets.
The hotel has 43 rooms over 4 floors. The bedrooms are beautifully furnished and decorated with the emphasis on comfort. The rooms offer a wide range of facilities.
The Pousada’s ‘Manifesto Bar Lounge’ is a cosy and casual area where guests can enjoy breakfast whilst watching this fascinating city wake up. On the terrace, adjacent to the bar, guests can sample Portuguese wines, tapas and cocktails.
Alfama is one of Lisbon’s oldest and most colourful neighbourhoods with its cobbled streets running from the Tagus River and St. George’s Castle. The best way to get to know this beautiful neighbourhood is by getting lost in its labyrinth of streets and alleys. From Pousada de Alfama you can easily visit some of Lisbon’s main monuments such as Sé Cathedral, St. George’s Castle, National Pantheon, St. Antonio’s Church or Praca do Comercio.
One of Alfama’s highlights is Fado, a unique style of music and song characteristic of Portugal and particularly Lisbon. In this area you can enjoy great food and wine and experience this cultural gem in one of the many restaurants or Fado clubs.

Location/Directions
Address:
Rua de São Tomé nº76
1100-561 Lisbon
Surrounding area:
- Sintra (25 kms): A UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its fairytale palaces, incredible vistas, and notable museum collections.
- Estoril (24 kms): A cosmopolitan coastal town which has maintained its somewhat faded grandeur. The picturesque beach of Tamariz is overlooked by a castle and has many cafes and bars. Behind the beach is the casino which was the inspiration for Ian Fleming’s James Bond and Casino Royal.
- Cascais (24 kms): A former fishing village, now a cosmopolitan beach town.
- Guincho (35 kms): The magnificent sandy Atlantic beach of Guincho has some of the best rollers in Europe – it’s a true paradise for surfers.
- Mafra (42 kms): When built, the gigantic Mafra Palace was intended to compete in magnificence and grandeur with Spain’s Escorial and St. Peter’s in Rome.
- Ericeira (54 kms): A charming fishing village with narrow streets, whitewashed houses, sandy beaches and excellent seafood restaurants.
- Queluz (14 kms): The Palace of Queluz is Portugal’s finest example of Rococo architecture.
- Setubal (48 kms): An industrious fishing town with a charming old centre. It’s striking 15th century Gothic-Manueline Church of Jesus is recognised as the earliest example of Manueline architecture in Portugal and it was described by Hans Christian Andersen as ‘one of the most beautiful small churches I have ever seen.’
- Troia (15 minute car ferry trip from Setubal): A stunning peninsula with 18kms of clean, soft sandy beaches, some of the cleanest in Portugal. Although parts of the island are built up you can still find untouched, secluded sandy beaches. There is also an 18 hole Championship golf course and restaurants famous for their seafood.
- Sesimbra (39 kms): A small fishing village overlooked by a Moorish castle. It has excellent beaches and seafood restaurants who serve the day’s catch of local fishermen.
- Arrabida National Park (40 kms): Stretching to the Atlantic Ocean, the park boasts a spectacular granite ridge and the area is a haven for wildlife. The Portinho de Arrabida, where the Park meets the Ocean, is a sheltered beach with crystal clear waters.
I was glad I found this comfortable boutique hotel in the historic district of Alfama. The rooms are not very spacious but grant a pleasant stay. I’ ve been wanting to stay in this area for a long time and the Pousada was an excellent choice.
Stayed during the Santo Antonio’s celebrations and was surprised by the atmosphere, the narrow streets with food and beer stands, music in each square, the vibe was unbelievable. The Pousada is not one of those large hotels you can expect in a capital but is comfortable and has precious details that make it a unique place. It was convenient to attend the festivities although it was noisy at night but that is understandable as those were the major festivities in Lisbon.
