Luxurious accommodation
at the Hotel Pousada de Sagres which is on the top of the cliffs
overlooking the clear blue waters of the Atlantic in the Algarve,
Portugal.
Situated in the south west of
the Algarve, this wild and wind swept promontory has beautiful sandy beaches
and is a popular diving spot.
This area is of historical
importance due to the 15th Century School of Navigation established here
by Henry the Navigator.
This quickly became a centre
of excellence attracting the best mariners in the country and enabled the
Portuguese discoveries of the Atlantic Islands, Brazil and the route around
South Africa to the far East.
The ruined Fortaleza in Sagres
contained the school and Henry the Navigator's house.
It has an enormous wind rose
- a stone compass set in the ground. With a diameter of 43 metres it was
used for training young seamens navigation skills.
The bay in front of the Pousada
often has ships at anchor, waiting for favourable winds and tides to round
the corner into the Atlantic and make the journey to Northern Europe.
North of Sagres is the beautiful
17th Century church of Vila do Bispo, its interior completely covered in
gilding or azulejos (tiles).
Six kilometres from Sagres
is the most south western point in Europe, Cabo Sao Vicente.
This dramatic headland is
a haven for bird life especially during the migration period.
Stand on the end of the world
and watch the sun sink into the rushing Atlantic waves.
The superb Pousada de Sagres
has built up an excellent reputation for its seafood cuisine using local
produce, and dining in its restaurant is an experience not to be missed.
The accommodation at the
Pousada comprises 16 standard bedrooms, 32 superior rooms and 3 suites, all with private bathroom, telephone,
television and minibar.
Facilities include air conditioning,
lift, restaurant, bar, terrace, heliport, swimming pool, tennis court,
facilities for disabled persons and parking.
This Pousada also has conference
facilities.
A swim in the sea water swimming
pool, or taking coffee on the terrace will make you forget the usual hustle
and bustle of other Algarve resorts.
Other activities available
in the area include golf, horse riding, diving, water sports, hand gliding,
mountain biking, country walks, fishing, deep sea fishing, cruises, four
wheel driving and water parks.
The Ria Formosa Natural Park near Tavira is also well worth a visit.
The Algarve is of course
also very famous, around the world, for its superb golf couses which can
be seen at Algarve Golf courses.
The international airport
at Faro is approximately 115 kilometers from this Pousada of Portugal.
