This beautiful Hotel Pousada is situated in a magnificent 14th Century castle built by King Dinis of Portugal for his Queen, Saint Isabel.

The Pousada Estremoz is one of the most luxurious in the group.

It is a former royal residence and has a hilltop position overlooking the little town of Estremoz.

The area around the town is rich in marble which in many instances has been utilized to replace traditional building materials, giving even the smaller houses a sense of opulence.

Due to its strategic hilltop position overlooking the Alentejo plains, Estremoz was one of the most important fortifications in the country and the influence of other cultures is reflected in the battlements which have a Moorish feel.

Situated in the lower town is the large market square, the bustling Saturday market sells everything from olives and cheese to the locally produced red earthenware pottery.

While in the area, visit the little white marble town of Borba and sample the locally produced wine which is considered to be one of the best in the country or, spend a leisurely few hours browsing through the numerous antique shops.

Approximately 19 kilometres from Estremoz is the town of Vila Vicosa, which houses the last royal residence of the House of Braganca.

The Paco Ducal is open to the public and houses fine examples of porcelain, azulejos and tapestries. The royal chambers give an insight into the lifestyle of the family until the monarchy was deposed in 1910.

To the east of the Palace square is the Augustinian Convent containing the tombs of the Dukes of Braganca. The tombs of their wives are in the Convento das Chagas on the south side of the square. The room in which Saint Queen Isabel died in 1336 is now a small chapel in her memory.

Just to the north of the town is 5,000 acre royal hunting ground.

Pousada of Estremoz has 29 standard rooms, 3 superior rooms and 1 suite all with private bathroom, hair dryer, locker, bathing gowns, air conditioning, Cable television, telephone and minibar.

The bedrooms have all been individually designed and many have four poster beds and locally made rugs on the floor.

The public rooms are connected by marble corridors and grand staircases and contain the finest antiques and period furniture.

Facilities at the beautiful Estremoz Pousada include air conditioning, free wireless internet access in the public areas, lift, restaurant, bar, terrace, swimming pool and parking.

There are also conference facilities.

Dining in Portugal is usually very good and the restaurants of the Pousada group hotels are no exception. They offer a variety of dishes including a selection of local and regional specialities.

From the private palace gardens and swimming pool, surrounded by battlements, you have the most spectacular views of the Alentejo plains which combine with the atmosphere of this historic royal residence to make an unforgettable visit.

At certain periods the Pousada can arrange "18th Century" evening by request.

Activities in the area include hunting, country walks, cycling and theme tours.

The international airport at Lisbon (Lisboa) is approximately 169 kilometers from this Pousada of Portugal.

We stayed in this wonderful pousada for two nights at the end of November and were so thankful for the warmth and comfort of our beautifully appointed room after long days of exploring the area. The view from our window of the beautiful Alentejo countryside was amazing, and we thoroughly enjoyed wandering around and marveling at the grandeur of this beautiful palace. The gardens and pool area were still lovely even at this time of year.

We very much enjoyed the pousada. We actually rearranged our trip around our stay there, and were not disappointed. How often do you get to stay in an actual castle?? Our five year old son and twelve year old nephew thought it was fantastic. The views from the tower were amazing, and the room was incredible. It was like staying in a museum. The staff were quite helpful, and non-intrusive. We didn't eat dinner at the hotel, we wandered into Estremoz, which is an easy walk. Plenty of parking was available immediately in front of the pousada, which was a nice surprise. A highlight of the entire trip to Portugal was the little chapel of Saint Isabella, tucked away in a corner of the castle - a beautiful brush with history. The pousada certainly wasn't inexpensive (by far the highest priced room we stayed in) but it was a good value - well worth it. We would love to stay there again one day!

The Hotel Rainha Santa Isabel was an incredible revelation. The history of the pousada had us all in awe. We all climbed the Tower and enjoyed the magnificent views over the marble towns. We all wanted a full tour of the pousada and its exciting rooms, nooks and crannies. It was a very memorable stay and we felt the history coming out of the walls. Several of our group wished they had packed a full medieval costume to descend the grand staircase and walk into the dining hall where Vasgo Da Gama had paid his respects to the Queen. We were quite thrilled to stay there. Unfortunately we were uncomfortable with the short time and cost of wi fi which is essential in today's world and would really have loved some sort of reasonably priced laundry facility other than the outlandish prices on the charge sheet in our rooms. The exquisite marble bathrooms were strewn with drying clothes for most of the stay, an unsightly return to realilty. The Staff were excellent, although the evening meal took about 3 hours to be fully served and some people left the table having travelled from Madrid via Toledo and Merida that day and needing a quicker meal and earlier night. A brilliant chef indeed, but could there possibly be a quicker option offered for those too tired to really appreciate the magnificent setting and the food. Otherwise a wonderfully romantic setting for a pousada.

We stayed 3 nights (first week of November) and is was a nice experience to be there. The staff was friendly and the dinners in the great restaurant were good. The pool was closed in this period so we can't say anything about that facility. Breakfast was oke but not very variated but that perhaps because it was low season with only a few guests at the time.
