Description
Hotel Beja – A Unique Pousada
With an impressive history dating back to the 13th century, the Pousada of Beja is located in the heart of the city. The Hotel Beja has retained many of the original features of the convent’s 800 year history – the spacious rooms and high ceilings provide a perfect refuge for guests wishing to escape the hot Alentejan summer sun.
Despite its central location in Beja, the Hotel Sao Francisco has interior decor, with vaulted ceilings and beautiful lounge areas and delightful gardens, which feature a swimming pool, and make it an ideal place to relax after exploring this fascinating city.
The Pousada Beja has 35 rooms, including 4 superior rooms and 1 suite. The rooms are located in the converted monk’s cells so what they lack in space, they make up for in character. All rooms have en-suite bathroom, air conditioning/heating, minibar, bathrobes, hairdryer, safe, telephone, cable TV and internet access.
Enjoy the Rich History of the Area from Hotel Beja
The city of Beja, that hosts the Hotel Beja and is the largest town in the Alentejo, dates back to 48 BC when it was founded by Julius Ceasar. Beja is famous for its 14th century castle which was built by Dom Dinis I on the site of a Roman fort, and the basilica of Santo Amaro, one of the few surviving buildings from the period before the Moors ruled this area of Portugal. A walk through the narrow streets of the old quarter of Beja will reveal attractive white washed houses with iron doorways and window grills.

Location/Directions
Address:
Largo D. Nuno Álvares Pereira
7801-901 Beja
Surrounding area:
- Serpa (28 kms): The small walled town of Serpa is a typical Alentejo market town which has been inhabited since Celtic times.
- Moura (52 kms): Moura is a lovely spa town. Its thermal mineral waters are still used today and are considered to be particularly beneficial to anyone suffering from rheumatism.
- Evora (82 kms): A UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its well-preserved old town centre. It is partially enclosed by medieval walls and has a Roman temple and many monuments from various historical periods.
This was our first stop on a tour of three Pousadas (the others being Evora and Alcacer do Sal)
This is a stunningly beautiful building. The bedrooms are good and of a reasonable size. The garden and pool areas are good. The reception staff were very pleasant and extremely helpful.
There do not appear to be any decent restaurants in Beja, but we found the 20 euro menu quite acceptable in the hotel, where the dining room is quite magnificent – although we agree with a previous comment that the children’s play area was not in the ideal position in relation to the dining room.
Beja is very pleasant and worth a visit for a couple of days
This is a really great place to stay. As with all the other 3 Pousada’s we stayed at the staff couldn’t have been more pleasant or accommodating, the room which overlooked the square was very comfortable and twice the size you’d normally expect.
The breakfast, was fine the evening meal worth the money and the wine and drinks not at all expensive.
One minor niggle is that none of the Pousada’s have BBC World on the TV they might like to look at that.
We would not hesitate to recommend the Pousada’s to anyone wishing to do their own thing in Portugal.
We stayed 3 nights in the this Pousada while touring Portugal and we thought it an excellent place to stay and explore the region. The Pousada itself was lovely, staff were very friendly and efficient, food was very good and the whole place had a lovely atmosphere. We would certainly stay here again if in the area.
We have only just started using pousadas and this was our first one.we thought that they were marvelous and could not believe what they have done with old convents and monasteries.
We stayed three nights at the Pousada at the beginning of March. The staff were really helpful and very nice. The building still keeps the atmosphere of an old monastery with its cloister, refectory and church. We took the opportunity to visit Beja and other villages of Southern Alentejo, such as Serpa and Mertola. All the region was fascinating.
