built by King Filipe, the Hotel Pousada
de Setubal is on a hilltop overlooking the city.

largest port and still holds fish auctions every morning at the harbour.
The old town has a number
of interesting monuments, the most important being the Igreja (church)
de Jesus.
This church is considered
to be the first Manueline building and boasts an impressive doorway.
Its twisted granite pillars
were hewn and transported from the nearby Arrabida Natural Park.
The Igreja de Santa Maria
da Graca was built in the 13th Century. It was rebuilt in the 16th Century
and contains beautifully carved altars and 18th Century azulejos (tiles).
The museum Michel Giacometti
has an excellent collection of ethnic tools once used by local artisans.
Setubal offers a rare opportunity
to take a boat trip on the Sado estuary to see the bottle nosed dolphins.
The Arrabida Natural Park
is 20 kilometres from Setubal, it has a spectacular granite ridge and is
a haven for wildlife.
A trip to Vila Fresca de
Azeitao is a must for wine connoisseurs.
A tour of the wine vaults
at Jose Maria is recommended and includes a free tasting of the locally
produced Muscatel.
The Pousada de Setubal has
a beautiful Baroque Chapel lined with azulejos (tiles) relating to the
life of St. Filipe.
