Designed by the well known Italian architect Nasoni and built in the mid 19th century, the Freixo Palace (Palacio do Freixo) is one of the most remarkable examples of Portuguese civil architecture from the Baroque period.

The palace was built on the orders of the Dean of Porto Cathedral, D. Jeronimo de Tavora e Noronha – a wealthy nobleman, who was responsible for bringing the famous Italian architect to the city of Porto.

The Pousada of Porto has preserved the entire facade of the palace buildings, which became a National Monument in 1910.

The property consists of two separate but interconnected buildings: the Palace, which houses the restaurant, bar, lounges and meeting rooms; and the former Harmonia Flour Factory, where the bedrooms are located, some of them with a delightful view over the river.

Accommodation consists of 30 standard rooms, 47 superior rooms, 9 suites and 1 special suite. Bedrooms are equipped with air conditioning, cable television, mini bar, hairdryer, safe, internet access cable, telephone and hi-fi system with alarm and MP3 connection in the suites.

Hotel facilities include health club, a spa (sauna, Turkish bath, massage rooms), indoor and outdoor swimming pools, free wireless internet access in the public areas and parking.

The charming setting, the cuisine and the considerable on-site capacity make the Pousada Palacio do Freixo an ideal choice for leisure and also as a venue for major events and meetings.

Activities and places to visit in the area include sightseeing tours, cruises in the Douro river, Tram ride from the waterfront to the estuary, museums, Port wine cellars, golf and casinos.

Situated on the right bank of the River Douro, very close to its mouth, the city of Porto has a historical centre that still preserves a strong identity forged over many centuries. Its remarkable buildings and unique urban fabric enlivened by the great vitality of the local inhabitants. These were surely the reasons why UNESCO included Porto in its World Heritage list in 1996.

This classification also extends to the left bank including the Ponte de D. Luis, the city's famous iron bridge built by a disciple of the famous Eiffel. Also the Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar and the wine lodges that line the river bank in Gaia.

Porto airport is 18 kms away from the Pousada.

Wir waren anfangs Mai 2013 einige Tage in der Pousada del Porto. Das Zimmer auf den Fluss hinaus war geräumig, bequem und gemütlich, die sanitären Einrichtungen perfekt und der Gesamtluxus dem Preis entsprechend. Das Personal war, wie eigentlich fast alle Portugiesen, sehr dienstbeflissen und herzlich. Das Frühstücksbuffet opulent mit britischem Einschlag, baked beans und Rührei herrlich, die saussages echt britisch scheusslich. Für 5-10 € erreicht man mit dem Taxi recht gute Restaurants in der Umgebung. Wer gern portugiesisch isst, sei vor tripas portuguesas (Kutteln) gewarnt, die werden mit Kreuzkümmel gewürzt. Wer mit Fischen und Meeresfrüchten schlemmen will, geht am besten ins Cinquos oceanos, etwa 15 Minuten vom Hotel. Auf der Weiterfahrt im Dourotal entdeckten wir das Palacehotel mit einer wunderbaren Aussicht und Terrassengeländern aus Glas, in der Vorsaison zu einem Spottpreis von rund 60 €. Rack of lamb wunderbar, die Suppe polyvalent, trug je nach Garnitur einfallsreiche Namen, war aber immer köstlich. Die Weine waren hervorragend und sehr preiswert wir haben uns auf die Kellerei Cistus eingeschossen. Faszinierend sind die von Hand aus Granit gefügten Weinbergmauern vom Douro bis auf fast 1000 m.ü.M. Insgesamt machte uns das ländliche Portugal im Norden etwas den Eindruck wie Rumänien - noch sehr arm und eine noch sehr ausbaufähige touristische Infrastruktur

Our 2 nights at Pousada de Freixo were very enjoyable. Beautiful building (I realized on our return that I took more pictures of the Pousada than any other site in Porto). The staff is very professional and the room large and comfortable. We ate dinner there both nights because we enjoyed the ambience, food and service. The only small issue is that it's a bit far from downtown, but getting a taxi was quick and easy.

We stayed at the Pousade do Freixo for one night and thoroughly enjoyed the accommodations, restaurant, and location on the river. Staff and services were very good, very professional. Our one recommendation would be better, additional signage at the access point from the avenue. It took us two tries before we realized that the entry from the street required driving past the entry building to access the roadway to the front of the pousada.

we stayed for three nights at the Pousada Freixo and we were very happy there ,and perfectly satisfied. We had a suite with a view , it was large and very nice. Not a noise, huge and very comfortable beds .It's a very very beautiful place, the pools are lovely and the view on the Duro is wonderful. Very nice and helpful staff. I would like to come back soon !
