Hotel Pousada de Manteigas
is situated on the top of the Estrela mountain range in Portugal and enjoys
stunning views over the Zezere River Valley.

1000 metres in the Serra da Estrela Natural Park and is approximately
thirteen kilometres from Manteigas.
The Pousada is built entirely
from locally quarry stone and compliments the magnificent mountains which
surround it.
This area of pine forest,
river valleys and natural lagoons is the highest in Portugal and is a wonderful
region to explore on foot. In winter nearby Penhas de Saude has the only
skiing facilities in the country.
Approximately fourteen kilometres
from Manteigas is Sabugeiro, Portugal’s highest village.
Steeped in tradition, the
lifestyle of these mountain people has hardly changed over the years.
Here you can sample the local
wholesome food - sausages, rye breads and the delicious Estrela cheese.
This is predominantly a sheep
farming community and local fleeces are used to make a variety of woollen
goods - a must in the snowy winter months.
You will also see Serra da
Estrela puppies for sale. These cuddly balls of fluff grow into fierce
looking sheep dogs.
To the north of Manteigas
is the town of Gouveia.
It has some attractive buildings,
and amazingly, has a museum of modern art - the museum de Abel Monta is
named after a local artist who donated his collection of Portuguese art
to the gallery.
Pousada de Manteigas is the
perfect place to unwind and enjoy the peace and solitude of this spectacular
area.
