Originally a convent built in the 15th Century,
this Pousada hotel is situated in the centre of the historic town of Evora which has been classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
This impressive fortified town is known as the Portuguese capital of the renaissance.
The town attracted architects from
all over Europe resulting in a rich architectural heritage.
Within the Jardim Publico
is the Palacio de Dom Manuel, to whom the Manueline style of architecture is attributed.
The 2nd Century Roman temple
of Diana has 14 Corinthian columns which are probably the best preserved in Portugal and became the symbol of Evora.
The patronage of the House
of Avis, between 14th and 16th Centuries, resulted in the construction
of magnificent palaces and the Jesuit University.
Evora Cathedral (Se) is a
mixture of Romanesque and Gothic architecture with an 18th Century high
altar. The adjoining museum houses an abundance of interesting artifacts and relics.
Also worth a visit is the
bizarre 15th Century Capela dos Ossos whose walls are covered with the bones of monks.
The Convento dos Loios is
situated between the Palace of the Counts of Basto and the house of the Dukes of Cadaval.
The beautiful Pousada of
Evora has been carefully restored and has some ornate painted walls and ceilings in one of the lounges.
The tranquil atmosphere virtually
guarantees a restful nights sleep in the converted monks cells.
The accommodation at Evora Pousada comprises
26 standard bedrooms, 5 superior rooms and 5 suites, all with private bathroom, hair dryer, bathing gowns, air conditioning, Cable television, internet connection, telephone and minibar.
Facilities at Pousada Evora include restaurant, bar, terrace, free wireless internet access in the public areas, family games and swimming pool.
Dining in Portugal is usually
very good. The restaurants of the Pousada group hotels offer a variety
of dishes including a selection of local and regional specialities.
Activities in the area include cultural tours, city or mountain bike tours,
four-wheel driving, hot air ballooning, horse riding, shooting and karting.
The international airport
at Lisbon (Lisboa) is approximately 130 kilometers from this Pousada of Portugal.
