Opened in 1942, this hotel at Elvas in Portugal
was the first Portuguese Pousada to offer accommodation. It was built in
the typical style of the Alentejo region.
It is situated just outside
the town walls and is a short walk into the historic centre of Elvas.
This important border town
has some of the best surviving fortifications in Europe.
The walled town has a strong
Moorish feel and the narrow cobbled streets rise sharply to the 13th Century
castle, one of the most important in the Alentejo region.
The nearby Aqueduto da Amoreira
is a masterpiece of engineering.
Built between the 15th and
17th Centuries, this 7 kilometre long aqueduct still supplies water to
the Misericordia fountain.
The plain exterior of the
church of Nossa Senhora da Consolacao conceals a little jewel.
Built on a former Knights
Templar site, 16th Century chapel is covered in beautiful seventeenth century
azulejos (tiles).
Elvas is surrounded by rich
agricultural land and the busy fortnightly market attracts people from
the all over region selling every kind of produce.
The Pousada has 25 bedrooms,
all with private bathroom, air conditioning, cable television, telephone, minibar and writing desk.
Facilities include restaurant, bar, terrace, swimming pool, tennis court, family
games and parking.
The restaurants of the Pousada
group hotels offer a variety of dishes including a selection of local and
regional specialities.
Activities available in the
area include all varities of hunting, fishing, horse riding, shooting range
and country walks.
As this Pousada is situated
near the busy N4 road there may be some noise.
The international airport
at Lisbon (Lisboa) is approximately 209 kilometers from this Pousada of
Portugal.
