This luxury Pousada Hotel is in the beautiful coastal town of Cascais near Lisbon, Portugal.

The 16th century Citadel of Cascais has been converted to house a new Historic Design Pousada. This new Cascais Pousada is the creation of the architects Goncalo Byrne and David Sinclair. They were instructed to preserve and respect the heritage value of the old fort and the natural beauty of its surroundings.

This luxury hotel is inside the walls of the historical fortress which is in the centre of Cascais. Many of the bedrooms are dramatically set into the former military barracks. Others, more modern, enjoy spectacular views to the sea or over the huge internal patio spaces.

The Pousada Cascais has a total of 126 bedrooms including 18 suites. All bedrooms have air conditioning, mini bar, multi channel LCD television, wi-fi, direct dial telephone, safe and a hair dryer.

The Pousada of Cascais, Fortaleza da Cidadela, has restaurants, bars, free wireless internet access in the public areas, art shops, an indoor pool, a wellness centre and a business centre with ample meeting and conference facilities.

The Pousada is close to the centre of Cascais, the local beaches, parks and museums. Also nearby and east to get to by public ransport is the Casino at Estoril, the surfer’s paradise at Guincho and the Estoril race track. Lisbon, Portugal's capital city, is just a few kilometers away with a fast electric train every 10 minutes throughout the day..

Activities in the area include body boarding, windsurfing, water skiing, sailing, paragliding, country walks, fishing and tennis. There are also a number of excellent golf courses in the Lisbon area.

You may also care to visit the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park and the beautiful town of Sintra which has been classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. 

The international airport at Lisbon (Lisboa) is approximately 35 kilometers from this Pousada of Portugal.

We have just returned from a week's stay at the pousada in Cascais. We enjoyed it so much we are seriously thinking of booking a further week here this September. Everyone, from the reception staff, waiters and the chambermaids were without exception polite and welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble. We were lucky to have a room overlooking the marina which had ceiling to floor and wall to wall sliding glass door which led to huge patio. There were fresh flowers in the room. We arrived late at night after Resteraunts in Cascais were closed but had a really nice bar meal at midnight and the waiters did not make us feel we were a nuisance - the perfect introduction to this relaxing, welcoming hotel.

My husband and I stayed at the Pousada in Cascais for 6 days in September. I was sorry that we spent three days in Lisbon before coming to the Pousada as it would have been far easier and nicer to take the train in to Lisbon and Belem. We were very pleased with the hotel. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The Pousada was very clean and our room was lovely. Breakfast was served every morning in the restaurant by the pool and the selection was wonderful. You never had to search anyone down for coffee, they just showed up for refills. The Pousada was very close to beaches and the downtown of Cascais that had some lovely restaurants. Also very close to the bus and the train station. The train comes very frequently and will take you into Lisbon. We took the bus to Sintra at the advice of the staff and certainly enjoyed the wonderful castles there. While it does state it is a non-smoking property you can go out in the courtyard where there is an ashtray to smoke. We just had a regular room which was fine but next time I would get one with a balcony or marina view. We were very pleased with the Pousada and would certainly stay there again. My only complaint would be that the maid came late every afternoon to clean the room and then one hour later for turn down service!
