medieval castle into a luxury hotel in the Pousada group. The former
agricultural land which surrounds the Pousada has been converted into a
superb garden which features many beautiful plants of the region.
The castle has fascinating
architectural details of Mudejar, Gothic and Manueline styles. One of the
main features of the castle are the round towers and high walls which are
most unusual in this region.
The accommodation comprises
1 suite, 6 superior and 13 standard bedrooms all with private bathroom, air conditioning, telephone, Cable television, internet connection, mini-bar, safe, hair dryer and bathing gowns. The bedrooms are a mix
of twin and double bedrooms, some are are also inter-connecting.
The Pousada is air conditioned
and facilities include restaurant, bar, terrace, lift, swimming
pool, snooker, games room and parking.
There are also facilites
for conferences and business meetings.
An interesting feature is
the old keep of the castle which has been converted into the bar of the
Pousada.
The restaurant serves a variety
of dishes including a selection of local and regional specialities. It
is also very well known in the area for its excellent cellar of local Alentejo
wines.
The local 'festas' (festivals)
in the town of Alvito are usually held on the last Sunday of August and
again on 1 and 2 of November.
These 'festas' are usually
accompanied by letting off many rockets which were used before the days
of watches to summon the people to the processions and festivities.
In the area there are nature
trails and excursions by bicycle, horse or canoe can be arranged. You may
also care to vist the Evora World Heritage site or the Natural Park at Sao Mamede.
A pleasant place to visit
is the Barragem do Alvito where the cool waters of the dam make a pleasant
contrast to the Alentejo plains.
The international airport
at Lisbon (Lisboa) is approximately 148 kilometers from this Pousada of Portugal.
