This area is of historical importance due to the 15th century School of Navigation established here by Henry the Navigator.

This quickly became a centre of excellence attracting the best mariners in the country and enabled the Portuguese discoveries of the Atlantic Islands, Brazil and the route around South Africa to the far East.

The ruined Fortaleza in Sagres contained the school and Henry the Navigator's house.

It has an enormous wind rose - a stone compass set into the ground. With a diameter of 43 metres it was used for training young seamen navigation skills.

The bay in front of the Pousada often has ships at anchor, waiting for favourable winds and tides to round the corner into the Atlantic and make the journey to Northern Europe.

North of Sagres is the beautiful 17th century church of Vila do Bispo, its interior completely covered in gilding or azulejos (tiles).

Six kilometres from Sagres is the most south western point in Europe, Cabo Sao Vicente.

This dramatic headland is a haven for bird life especially during the migration period.

Stand on the end of the world and watch the sun sink into the rushing Atlantic waves.
