Pousada in Queluz

Pousada in Queluz – Hotel Dona Maria I

The Pousada in Queluz – Lisbon, D. Maria I, is a historic luxury hotel located in the building formerly used by the Royal Guard of the Court in the Palace of Queluz, known as the Portuguese Versailles.
Pousada in Queluz

Besides the palace, there are in Queluz some other interesting places that can have the attention of the first visitors, as some megalithic monuments (about 2500 bC) and some buildings from the 14th, 17th and 18th centuries. Around the old nucleus of the city started to appear some villas and houses that used to be summer houses in the beginner of this century.

The Pousada hotel privileged location, about 5 km from Lisbon, 14 km from Sintra and 20 km from Cascais, the attractive interior design and exacting recuperation of its little private “theatre”, combines with the exquisite cuisine of the Cozinha Velha Restaurant.

Hotel Dona Maria1 is one of our favourite pousadas. Each poussada tour will not be complete without visiting this hotel. The restaurant excites us every time we dine there. The room, the atmosphere, the personel, it is all perfect.

We stayed at the Pousada as part of our Son and Daughter-in-laws Wedding Celebrations and it was indeed a beautiful place with overall very attentive and friendly staff. Our only disappointment was that we were not informed on arrival that we needed to reserve tables for Dinner in the Restaurant and therefore had to arrange room service for the Honeymooners and their small child and wait until 10.30pm for the rest of our party who included two diabetics one of whom was 91yrs of age before we were able to obtain any seating in the Restaurant which by this time was coming to the end of service.

Place was very nice, great atmosphere. We had a bad surprise at billing time, when be booked the room we asked for half board treatment, well we eat for half board with a poar menu and then we had to pay for the dinners. They told, because an offert, the half board was included only for the first day, the other days was not included. Up to now I dont had any explanation on why, with a confirmed email with price and half board treatment, I required for booking, I had to pay that extras. I show the confirmation email to the reception but they dont care about that, they told me that I had to pay and that’s it. At the end I judge the check out so bad as was so nice was the stay.

We really enjoyed our 2 nights stay at this lovely poussada. The staff were most helpful and and the room was lovely. We were a little upset when we could not find the restaurant, and were told that it was across the main road in the Palace buildings. However the restaurant in the Old Kitchen was glorious and so was the food and service.

Queluz was so central for touring the area and I can certainly recommend this Poussada.

We stayed for 6 nights in early June 2011. We received a warm welcome and were offered a quiet, clean, comfortable, spacious, well appointed room on the ground floor. This was tidied and cleaned efficiently on request.

The restaurant adjoining the Palace was delightful and we very much enjoyed our first meal there.
Hotel staff were extremely helpful with maps, travel advice and local information.

We enjoyed our stay very much.

Everything was great! We had a very nice stay.

  8. Diane Forget says:

This was our first Pousada and the beginning of our stay in Portugal. Really enjoyed it, the welcoming was good,we were able to have coffee when we were waiting for our room. Dinner in the gorgeous dining room was amazing, worthed to stay and dine. They kept all the ancient elements and decoration. Rice pudding was awsome, we didn’t find any other pousada that had it. Thought it was one of their local dish….Worthed the stay.

We stayed at a number of Pousadas (Quelux, Condeixa, Viseu, Sagres) and at the first the receptionist was an exceptionally helpful person (my wife had had a fall and bent her glasses, she also advised about food and what to see in Coimbra). At Condeixa the reception was average, the food we had heard was not very good and the breakfast coffee and offerings matched that description; the Visu reception had difficulties with English and my wife’s Portugese though the gentleman there was very good and the person serving gluten-free charming. The reception at Sagres was not friendly at all and why pay extra for a view when the place is near empty? The food at Sagres was average though the breakfast very good.
Back to Quelux for superb people, food and explanations

Everything was at its best at the Pusada in Queluz or we would not have stayed there alredy 4 times and we will be back there in Sept. 2011. We visited the Palacio de Queluz across the street. The Palacio and the gardens were great.

  11. Greg Kolb says:

Very nice room and staff. The meal within the King’s kitchen was very special. The day after we left Queluz we were robbed in Sintra. Our luggage was stolen from the car, including our passports. Luckily, the Queluz staff had a photocopy of our passports which they sent us when we were at another Posada. That made getting new passports much easier. Lesson … don’t leave your passports in your luggage! Despite the theft, we very much enjoyed our stay in Portugal and all the 5 Posadas we stayed at.

  12. Alex Vitievsky says:

Excellent hotel that can be used as a base for exploring Sintra and the coast (Estoril, etc). Great, clean rooms with old country flair. Very helpful staff. Don’t miss a dinner in their restaurant (expensive for Portugal but well worth it). We went there 2 nights in a row. The palace across the street is amazing and the grounds are equal if not better than Versailles. Don’t be turned off by the exterior of the palace, it’s great inside. I would not recommend this hotel for Lisbon travellers since one can get good accomodations in the center without the hasle of taking a train back and forth. However if you have a car and are looking to stay near Sintra and the coast I would definitely recommend this place. Have fun

After spending 6 weeks traveling throughout Portugal, we chose Queluz at the end of our itinerary as it offered an easy access to the Airport upon our return to Canada. I must give full marks to the staff for their attention and cordiality. Our room was immaculately clean and the surrounding areas very convenient for long walks. The little town is charming and a perfect way to end a fantastic trip through a magnificent Country. In saying that I must mention Pousada do Freixo in Porto, one of the most attractive places we stayed during our entire travels. Queluz is not in my view a destination place, just a convenient stop when needing to access Lisbon for one reason or another as it was in our case.

We were holidaying for two weeks in the Algarve and drove to Lisbon via Sintra, which is well worth the visit, with two friends to stay at this Pousada for two nights – 13/14 September mainly in order to visit Lisbon. (Can recommend the train to access Lisbon – station a short walk from the Pousada.) Exceptionally good, polite and helpful staff on reception but agree that the bar was not a full bar and having to wait for reception staff to have a spare moment to serve drinks was not the perfect outcome at the end of a very hot day – 35 degrees in Lisbon. Breakfast was good, our ground floor room huge and extremely clean and comfortable and although the air con was ‘on the blink’ I am sure this was remedied as soon as we reported it on checkout. The restaurant in the palace was fantastic as regards ambience and service which was second to none. However, it was expensive and as we did not have the benefit of any discount, pre-drinks, wine, and a 3 course meal for four worked out at the equivalent of £230 – desserts were amazing. We would recommend a Pousada based on our experience of Dona Maria I and will definitely try more locations in the future.

  15. Rob Woodburn says:

Top marks for first impressions – a warm welcome and quick transition to a comfortable room after our late arrival by air from London. Queluz is easy to find when driving from the airport and is close to both Lisbon and Sintra. Friendly and courteous staff, good service and a great breakfast – waking up and seeing the palace across the road was a great start to our holiday.

  16. Paige Rose says:

Stayed five nights in Queluz and loved room, staff, location, and breakfast arrangement. Was visiting friends that live close by. Also
visited Evora, Arraiolos, Sintra, Lisbon and the Palace across the street.
I would definitely recommend this Pousada. The staff could not have been more helpful. I give Queluz the highest of ratings for value received for cost. I will return.

  17. Brian & Alison Taylor says:

We have just returned from a two week holiday in Portugal staying at 4 Pousadas. First stop was Queluz for 5 nights to enable us to see Lisbon. Unfortunately the Pope decided to be in Lisbon at the same time, which meant we had to modify plans a bit!

The Reception staff at Queluz could not have been more helpful and were probably the best of all 4 Pousadas visited. We had an excellent room, albeit backing on to the back and as repoted elsewhere subject to Reveille and Last Post calls from the barracks behind. Being ex military was able to cope with this. The restaurant across the road (part of the old Palace) is well worth a visit. Its ambience is spectacular and the food excellent. However as with all 4 Pousadas the meals are quite expensive even taking into account the 20% discount offered by the Passport scheme.

The one criticism of the Pousada at Queluz is that it is not ideal for a long stay as we did. After long days trailing around the Lisbon area there was nowhere really to chill out except ones own room or a small uninteresting lounge. The bar lacked character and choice and had to be operated as and when required by the Reception staff. No outside amenity to sit around and watch the world go by. Breakfast is served in the Pousada rather than the restaurant across the road and is very good.

However for just a couple of nights the Pousada is ideally situated for covering the Lisbon and Sintra areas. Plenty of car parking space, and Queluz station is only 10 minute walk away if you are prepared to use the very efficient public transport system and its wide variety of concessionary tickets.

  18. Raylene Grynkewich says:

We stayed at the de D Maria I Queluz/Lisbon just one night in April, 2010. Was very impressed with the staff, who helped us with our bags and showed us to our room. (elevated was broken) The room faced the barracks in the rear and we enjoyed the nighttime taps and in the morning waking up to revelry. There were some noisy birds around the grounds but not enough for us to shut the windows. The restaurant attached to the pousado (acr0ss the street) was excellent and the service great. Our morning breakfast, included, was also very nice and adequate. We certainly enjoyed the palace tour. Only complaint was that a light did not work and the bathroom window was warped and very hard to open. Would recommend this very convenient location to Lisbon and away from the crowds.

  19. Carole Ingram says:

We stayed for 2 nights at Queluz and visited the Palace and Gardens and drove to Sintra for an afternoon. The staff were really helpful, friendly and professional and the food was excellent. The bedroom and the public rooms were great. The sound of the frogs in the water feature around the outside of the Pousada were very amusing once we had worked out what the noise was. We also stayed at Evora and Marvao which were also very good in different ways.

  20. elizabeth harris says:

This is a great place and across the street is a wonderful palace with gardens worth seeing. I felt like Alice in Wonderland in the gardens searching out the Cheshire cat. The help is gracious, especially in reception, Diogo, to be exact, couldn’t do enough for us. The rooms are quite charming and easy to live in. The breakfast is good and it’s a 15 minute walk to subway. Easy to get to Sintra from here which is very worth seeing. Booking is easy and the prices very fair. A good alternative to mid-city staying.

  21. DAVID STURLA says:

Excellent hotel and really good value. Breakfast was good and the staff were welcomming & polite Room very good clean & well appointed, Whilsr there we used the train to visit Lisbon & Sintra.

  22. David Priestley says:

The Pousada at Queluz is delightful, fascinating and atmospheric and is also well situated for visiting Sintra and Lisbon. The staff were friendly and helpful, the food very good and our room comfortable. Highly recommended.

  23. J L says:

We stayed at all the Pousadas we booked through you and had a lovely
time in all of them. the service was good, staff very friendly and
helpful and the settings all so beautiful in their own way. We had a
delightful holiday, thank you for all your help. Booking through you
and via the internet was so easy.

  24. sandy says:

It’s very easy to get into Lisbon from Queluz (short walk to the train station, and a 20 minute ride to the center of town). For that reason alone, I recommend this pousada. The hotel itself was also nice, the staff polite, and the rooms very comfortable.

  25. Justice Tower says:

Reception staff was extremely helpful. We had a corner room and enjoyed it very much though parts of the walls behind curtains have mold. The pousada is situated in a very convenient location, to Lisbon, Sintra and Obidos. We enjoyed our experiences at all three pousada’s we stayed and will recommend them to friends.

  26. Scott Brasher says:

Convenient location to Lisbon and Sintra. We enjoyed the room (the largest of the three pousadas we visited) and the view of the palace from our room was great. Helpful and attentive staff.

  27. Kathleen Wylie says:

Hotel was wonderful, the room was very comfortable. However the restaurant was the worst meal we had on our stay in Portugal. In fact we could not finish it. That apart the pousada in Queluz was very welcoming and we did enjoy our stay.

  28. Steve Mannion says:

Reception and attention very good. Lights in corridor not working and the wooden floor in the bedroom entrance worn and broken. I reported these matters on departure. Someone should ‘walk the job’
That said we did enjoy our stay and the hotel is well placed and value for money.
