We renewed our acquaintance with the Pousada at Marvao recently. Previously we had visited in the late 1970's. Everything about our latest experience was excellent with one very big exception, the food & wine at Dinner. The menu was poor and the preparation / ingredients of the dishes we chose was even more so. The choice of wine was also poor and well overpriced. Our exposure to Portugal is wide, varied and spans many years so we do have a good idea of what standards should be. We love Portuguese cuisine so you'll understand our disappointment at Dinner.

Pousada Marvao was just wonderful. We stayed in a suite. the views from the hotel was just amazing. The staff were so friendly and accommodating and the food excellent. Marvao is also a delightful quaint village up on a ridge overlooking Spain on one side and Portugal on the other. It is a must see and when going definitely stay at the Pousada.

Delightful area, Hotel clean and staff courteous and efficient. Breakfast choice limited and meals could have been better.
Visitors to the Fort around Marvao need to be fit!

My is my third visit to Marvao. I love it more each time I visit. Depending on the time of the year, you find there are VERY FEW tourists. Take in the view. Talk to the wonderful people that live there. The view at night looking onto the Spanish side is beautiful, but getting larger each year (more lights)
The food is great, the staff is the same each time and it is nice to be recognized! It is one of my favorite places on earth.. truly

We spent one night at the Pousada. The town was recommended by someone as a must see. When we arrived, there was low cloud, and the weather didn't cooperate to allow us to see much. There was a sign post with 2 signs to the Pousada, each pointing in opposite directions, which was a bit confusing, but we found it. We wanted a double, but got 2 twin beds. The room was very comfortable, and had nice linens, and good amenities. There was no internet, which was disappointing. In order to get reception on my BlackBerry, I had to hang outside the window, right into the street, as people were walking past.

We had dinner at the Pousada, since there wasn't much else in town. THe dining room looks out to the Portugal side, and if it were clear, the view would have been great. The meal was good, the wine was excellent. It was a bit costly, but food was good. The breakfast in the morning was extensive, including eggs, fruit, wonderful breads, and was very good.

We enjoyed our stay.

My family spent 1 night in Marvao and we loved it. Marvao is spectacular and definitely one the wonders of Portugal, Castelo de Vide is only about 20 minutes and is another beautiful place you should visit, then there are the Roman ruins of Ammania also not far from Marvao and on the road to Portalegre. The pousada was charming, very clean, we had apparently one of the few rooms with a balcony that overlooked the town, the restaurant also has great views and we found the food reasonable, the wine excellent, food service could be better, but the rest of the staff were excellent, will definitely go back there on my next visit to Portugal

Stayed here in June. Warm welcome from reception. Requested double bed, offered only 2 singles. Dinner in restaurant was a disaster. No atmosphere, heavy menu, cold food - returned to kitchen. 3 staff were working around us trying to set up room for breakfast - even as we had our starter at 2030. Eventually, my husband walked out, plate and napkin in hand and we finished our meal in our bedroom! Not impressed, nor was the Receptionist, who says this sort of thing happens regularly. Sadly, on return to Lisbon, other friends commented on the same very disappointing restaurant. Would sincerely NOT recommend.

My second visit to spectacular Marvao - but first staying at the pousada. Our room was excellent, lovely, crisp, white bedlinen BUT, oh dear, the food was disappointing to say the least. Twice dishes were sent back as they were cold and on our second night most things we ordered were not available!
