Pousada in Belmonte – Hotel Convento de Belmonte
Set on the slopes of the Esperanca Mountain, at just over 1 km from the town of Belmonte, the birthplace of Pedro Alvares Cabral, the Pousada Convento de Belmonte results from the renovation of the former Nossa Senhora da Esperanca Convent.
Inside, the chapel and sacristy have been converted into a lounge and bar a good example of the harmonious blend of historical architecture and modern construction and comfort.
The Pousada hotel has preserved the Monastery’s heritage intact (the site was classified as a building of public interest in 1986), included amphitheatre architecture layout in the pine woods on the slopes of Esperança´s Mountain, and stunning landscape with views over the Cova da Beira region and Estrela’s Mountain.
Guests can use this historic luxury hotel as a base for exploring the many historical monuments is the region, including the castle, the burial vault of the Cabral family, the Jewish Quarter, as well as the natural beauty and folk traditions of Serra da Estrela (Estrela´s Mountain), one of the Europe’s most important natural reserves.

Lovely location , we have stayed there 3 times now and it is still stunning. Convenient for the motorway and close to some beautiful country. Food is excellent if slightly pricey. Belmonte village worth a visit also.
We stayed for three nights in this first class pousada. Exellent staff and food !
We stayed for two nights on our pousada trip at Belmonte and loved it. The ambiance brings you to a different time and it was elegant and very historical . Dining was excellent and the rooms were large and comfortable. Staff were great and friendly , very accommodating to meet all your needs !! We had an excellent meal and breakfast every morning was delicious. Black bottomed pool was also nice and the views magnificent. Remote and quiet but breathtaking. Nice small town to explore and away from all the action !!
We have visited twenty Paradores and Three Poussadas.
This is one of only two we have visited twice!
Lovely setting..Exactly half way from Santander to our place in the Algarve. On this occasion we would want to especially commend the reception staff. Excellent
The Pousada was excellent in every way but particularly the evening meal which was quite exceptional possibly the best ever in Portgal over many years.We will be back i September with a party of 10
We stayed at this Pousada halfway through our two-week honeymoon in Portugal, and were completely enchanted by the setting, the spacious room with balcony, and the service. I mentioned to Paula as she was showing us our room that it was our honeymoon, and when we returned from a hike, there was a bottle of sparkling wine with two glasses waiting in our room … what a lovely surprise! The town itself was also full of unexpected delights, from the museums (the Jewish history museum and the Museum of the Discoveries particularly impressed us) to just walking through the streets closest to the castle. Truly a wonderful experience!
The hotel building is quite enchanting. The reception was fast and smooth. The place is lovely and very clean. The food was generaly good except for the Javalie which made me sick but not the others who ate it. The wines are of top quality and selection. Overall we loved the experienc and will be back. Just no Javalie Cheers
Once we found our way, more signs needed, we were warmly welcomed.It is in a lovely location,tranquil with great views although some of the trees need lopping so as not to spoil the view from our lovely spacious bedroom. Car parking was safe which was important as we had a car load of equipment for our villa in the Algarve.
Good meal in the evening although serving 2 plates of delights under the guise of the high cover charge was rather over the top.Head waiter could do with some more charm.
Breakfast was excellent lots of choice,excellent rolls/croissants etc ideal after a very good sleep.
All in all highly recommended,friendly helpful staff and perfect location.
The reception was excellent-and they all spoke very good English. Parking was also safe.
The room was very well appointed with a view of the garden.
Meals were good, but the dining room could benefit from some better lighting, especially by the windows.
We were glad of the signs to get to the Pousada as it is quite a distance from the town. A few more signs would be reassuring!
Visit the tourist information at the castle, and go around the castle itself.
On the way from Spain we stopped at Almeida which was interesting and definitely worth the stop.
Also worth a visit is the round trip route via Manteigais through the Vale glaciario do Zezero.
When we left we planned to visit Linhares, but they will need to signpost it better from the crosscountry route if they want the visitors!
We really enjoyed our stay- our first experience of Portugal and pousadas.
We loved the Hotel Convento de Belmonte! The reception was gracious and efficient. The building is beautiful, as is the view from our room (Friar José) and the restaurant. The food was excellent. The Pousada is perfect for a romantic getaway (we were celebrating our 5th anniversary). Belmonte itself has a lot to see, especially for a town of its size. We missed the olive oil museum, but we’ll be sure to see if next time. It was our first visit, and we will return.
We returned for our 4th visit and as ever had a lovely time. We have two very small children and always stay in the suite, which gives us plenty of room and a good sized balcony (well, more of a small roof-top garden overlooking the pool), which suits the children. Food in the evening was delicious although service at breakfast was pretty slow – I had to go and knock on the kitchen door to find somebody… However, all-in-all, we will be back soon and have just recommended it to my brother-in-law.

The black colour of the swimming pool is not attractive…
We hope to go back to Belmonte for the 3th time next year.

Not even the cold, wet weather this March could spoil our stay in Belmonte. The pousada is delightful with an excellent restaurant and breathtaking views. The little town is full of interest and the Estrela mountains across the valley are wonderful with some remarkable scenery and testing roads.
Thanks to all concerned. We hope to return.
We loved staying in this pousada. The weather in November is not warm but it was warm enough for us to sit on the small balcony outside our room and enjoy the view. We dined in the restaurant both nights of our stay and while the service was great we felt the food missed the “excellent” mark. We did however, find one of the waitresses the most charming ever. Don’t know her name but she is “expecting” in January!
We enjoyed a lovely night is this pousada. The bedroom was very large and comfortable.

Overall, what we expect from a Portuguese Pousada.
The Pousada was absolutely lovely and the service excellent. We travelled with two small children and were given a spacious room with extra beds for both children. The location is charming with much to do in Belmonte and the hotel itself is certainly worth a visit.
A nice location and a most unusual Pousada The reception was first class and the room – Fr. Octavio – was spacious, quiet but did not have a wonderful view. The dining room staff were quite exceptional and the food was excellent and without doubt Belmonte will be on our itinerary next year when we return to the UK from the Algarve once again.
The town of Belmonte was interesting and well worth a second visit.
