The Pousadas of Portugal
The Pousadas of Portugal were created in the 1940′s with the
construction of the first Regional Pousadas. Its aim was to offer accommodation and meals taking into account the local culture and tradition.
In the 1950′s a new concept was born: the Historic Pousadas, set in interesting monuments carefully restored.
Historic buildings were recovered and given a new utility allowing guests to have a closer contact with each region and its history.
Located from North to South in Portugal, 
and in The Azores, the Pousadas are located in old castles, monasteries palaces, convents and fortresses, in places of significant beauty.

We recently stayed in 3 pousadas during a weeks holiday and found them exceptional.
They offered delightful and historical locations, luxurious decor, wonderful service and quiet and peaceful surroundings at very reasonable prices.
We plan to use them again on our next trip.

I just had a fantastic break in Pousada Viana do Castelo. The views are to die for..Staff very nice.. The town is small but welcoming, I recommend this destination.
